How a camera bulb is built

Look at the bottom of the dome, the part that faces away from the socket. On most camera bulbs the lens sits right in the center of that dome, behind a dark round window 5 to 15 mm wide. The window often looks like a black eye in the middle of the white plastic. A ring of small LEDs usually surrounds it, and some of those are infrared LEDs for night viewing.

Many models are pan-tilt designs. The lower half of the bulb rotates so the owner can turn the camera from a phone app, and the housing has a visible seam where the two halves meet. Some also have a small slot for a memory card on the side of the neck, often hidden under a rubber flap.

Nearly all camera bulbs connect to Wi-Fi. They are built for remote viewing, so the owner can watch live and get motion alerts. That makes the network scan more useful here than on many other disguises.

What gives a camera bulb away

• A dark circle in the middle of the dome. A normal bulb glows evenly. A camera bulb has an opaque spot where light does not pass.
• A seam or ridge around the middle. Pan-tilt models have a rotating lower section.
• A bulb that sticks out of its shade. Camera bulbs are taller and wider than a standard bulb, so a lampshade may not cover them.
• A bare bulb aimed at the bed or sofa. Downward-facing pendant lights and open sockets give a camera a clear view.
• Light that stays off while the bulb stays warm. The camera circuit draws power even when the lamp light is switched off in the app.
• A faint red glow in the dark. Some infrared LEDs give off a dim red dot you can see with your own eyes when the room is fully dark.

Which Candor checks help with a bulb

Start with the Wi-Fi camera scan. Join the property's Wi-Fi and let Candor look for devices that answer camera discovery requests or open video stream ports. A camera bulb on that network often shows up with a plain reason such as offering a live video stream. The honest limit: if the owner put the bulb on a separate network, or it only saves to its memory card, the scan will not see it.

The lens finder works well on a bulb with its light switched off. Point the flashlight at the dome and look for a sharp reflected point in the dark window. A lit bulb will flood the camera view with glare, so turn the lamp off first. Candor's front-camera infrared check can also show the IR ring glowing when the room is dark.

The Bluetooth scan sometimes catches a bulb that uses Bluetooth for its first setup, but many never advertise over Bluetooth, so a clean result means little. The magnetic sensor adds little here, since every smart bulb has a driver board.

Heat and electrical safety

A bulb that has been on can be hot enough to burn skin, and camera bulbs run warm even when their light is off. Switch the fixture off at the wall and wait a few minutes before you touch anything. Never unscrew a bulb from a socket that is still switched on, and do not touch the metal base or reach into an empty socket.

If you suspect a bulb, you can switch it off at the wall or unplug the lamp. That usually cuts the camera's power. Leave the bulb in place so the host or police can see it as it was, and photograph it and the fixture first. For a wider sweep of the room, see how to find hidden cameras.

How to check a light bulb for a camera

1. List every exposed bulbWalk the room and note bare bulbs, pendant lights and lamps whose bulb sticks out of the shade. Put the ones that face the bed, bath or sofa first.
2. Look at the dome in daylightCheck the bottom of each bulb for a dark center window, a seam, or a side flap. A plain bulb is smooth and evenly white.
3. Turn the lights off and let bulbs coolSwitch off each fixture at the wall so the glare is gone and the glass can cool. Leave it off while you work.
4. Sweep the dome with the lens finderIn the dark room, open Candor's lens finder and aim at each bulb from a few angles. A lens gives a small, steady bright point inside the dark window.
5. Try the infrared checkPoint the front camera at the bulb with the room dark. A ring of glowing dots around the center means infrared LEDs, which a normal bulb does not have.
6. Run the Wi-Fi scanConnect to the property's Wi-Fi and run the Wi-Fi camera scan. Compare any flagged device with what you can see, such as a TV or router.
7. Switch it off, photograph it, report itIf a bulb looks wrong, leave it switched off at the wall, take photos, and report it to the host, hotel or platform.
